Wedged into a small white-cedar woodland, this shade garden makes the most of its cozy 400 square feet. The client wanted a tranquil shade garden to replace the space left vacant by old tree growth and buckthorn.

Our approach to this garden was to play off the surrounding mature cedar trees which have low-hanging branches that have soft, fan-like foliage.

We drew on several native species that would enhance the airy effect of the trees. We designed the garden using carex as the structural support. We then layered in other natives, including maidenhair ferns, lady ferns, and wild ginger for ground cover. We also included the Japanese-painted fern as well as a deep burgundy Heuchera for a bit of subtle color.

The space will thicken over time and provide a lush quietly contemplative garden that flanks the front yard. The result is a perfect picture-window tableau that provides three-season interest.
